The I1 haplotype=Manduke, Manduka

My DNA test shows the paternal line as the I1 haplotype. This agrees with my research. I wouldbe very interested in other test results of males who have one of the name variants listed in the main article here.

The origin in the Balkans and North migrations seem very reasonable.

There is a facebook site dedicated to this haplotype also. i would appreciate any input!

Current notes and research

Recently, as the internet expands and improves, I have used some new web tools to map the surnames Manduke, Manduka, and Manduca. Some of my prior assumptions may have been in error. Mandzukic is a possible Croat variant. A Croatian webpage I have viewed translates this into "Manduka". This is as of yet unresearched.

Without any doubt now Manduke is a created name. I know my grandfathers birth name was Manduka and that he even crossed-out the "a" and wrote in an "e" in his 28th Division Pennsylvania National Guard book of WW 1, where he had fought in France.(110th Infantry, Meuse-Argonne,etc.) His unit was involved with the rescue of the famed "Lost Battallion". He won a purple heart and was very active in South Philly at the VFW.

The name Manduke is found only in the US in families derived from ours, And my cousin William Edgar Manduke III's, Wlad's GGreatgrandson's son's family in Germany, so far as I can identify now, and those unrelated, Manduke's whose families arrived later than 1860 whose names were butchered to be written wrongly as "Manduke" upon entry into a port by the authorities.

Of most interest is the fact that in Europe the largest concentration of the surname Manduka is found in Serbia, of note, Kosovo, and of note in and around the city of Pristina. The spelling Mandzuka has nearly an identical demographic (with an unresearched Norwegian population) and bears scrutiny. Circa 1700 many thousands of Christian Catholic serbs migrated to Austria to escape Muslim and Albanian atrocities. At that time, the Maltese Manduca's were doing other things. The primary question is if and when some ancestor left either Italy or Serbia and migrated towards Poland and spelled their name Manduka. The spelling natural for a Serb, a change for an Italian or Maltese.

The simplist hypothesis is that Wlad's Polish (Austrian-Prussian) roots are derived from his ancestors departure from the Balkans. The other is an Italo-maltese Manduca arrived in Poland and changed a letter for whatever reason.Without direct evidence these will be my assumptions.

Since the fellow discussed below is in Poland and apparently well established in 1751, long before the napoleonic wars, the Balkan-Serbian root seems more plausible, but not air-tight..

The historical records (Google, translated from Polish) show one reference to a man Jan Manduka (spelled as shown in Polish transcript written in 1751) who was, in 1751 a wine trader in Kalisz in Poland. Remember Manduka is absolutely NOT a Polish name. It is of Latinate origin. He was a repected man and was awarded some "serfs" and property in a resolution of a case involving the murder of a girl (Ughh!).

There are Manduka's in Poland today, as well as France and Germany. Of course, as these are ancestors of the Balkan Migrations. But keep in mind the ancient Roman centers of Kalisz in Poland and Pristina in Serbia, are areas that traded hands many times among European powers.

Both Pristina and Kalisz are located on important trade routes and are sights of uncountable military conquests. A trading family would do well to be in both places, and so would a wine merchant following various non-muslim armys! Speculation for color only!

As stated above, both European cities mentioned above were important and ancient key Roman capitals. Italy is obvious. The surname's Roman Latinate linguistic root and ancient connection to these trade and military centers is beyond obvious.

This current analysis proves that most Manduke families and all Manduka families in the US are descendants of Wladyslaw Manduka who arrived in New York on or about June 1857 on the ship Palastine, with his wife Mary Elizabeth (nee Whitehead) and possibly their infant son Arthur. There are no documents yet uncovered to support any other conclusion. There are at least 3 documented entries into the U.S. by Wlad, origins from a departure each in England, Germany, and Russia.

It is of note that today most Manduka's in Serbia are Muslim, decendants of forced conversion under muslim domination. There were several other large and small migrations North from there during several wars as Christians fled. The question remains, is Jan Manduka in the lineage? How does the military fit in?

The Polish calvary was involved in various wars in the area and in fact the local fortress at Golubac has a fountain honouring a fallen Polish Knight who was captured by invading Turks while fighting under a Hungarian monarch. I note that as a curiousity as Wladyslaw seemed to have some knowledge of horses as he was in the US Cavalry much later (1863), as he was a cavalry sergeant in the Crimean War (1855). Coincidence? Perhaps.

The invading Turks took young Christian boys as captives, converted them and placed them in the calvary. They were called Jannissaries, and could hold considerable power, property and authority. Only a point of interest.

As a child I heard in passing that "Stanislaw, or "Slopizlaw", was a horse thief and hanged for horse theft. He was probably maligned for the reasons I note in the main article.I grew up hearing all that. My mom used the palliative,"He was a veterinarian". William and other relatives recounted that Manduka's were mercenaries "Hessian" soldiers in the American revolution. This is undocumented, and perhaps wrongly passed down as Wlad was a mercenary in the Crimean war.

The other name variant is Manduca, and is centered in Southern Italy and Malta. Since this entire area was solidly central to the Roman empire and the latin root meaning of the names is the same (to eat, chew, food server,etc, manducar) I still think the names may be related but now I am considering that the relationship may be much more ancient, tenuous, or just my error in reseaching this complex mess.

Linguistically I am correct that a travelling ancient, even Roman Manduka or Manduca could respell his name for local pronounciation or acceptance issues just as Manduke (in my family) came from Manduka. I have even seen civil war records where Wladyslaw spelled it Manduke. But his British enlistment records (1855, Dover, Mercenary conscript)) clearly show Manduka and his father having the same name. Unless it is his mothers name.

There is an elusive person called John Manduka who is now searcheable. He was a soldier in the Spanish war and saw heavy action in the Philippines(1899-1901). He arrived US in 1887 (from Russia!-the borders and country names migrated so much as to almost be meaningless).

I do not know who he is. He was a young man and perhaps or somehow is related to Wladyslaw. I will try to obtain his military file. There are so few immigrants with that name relationship seems almost certain. There is another John Manduka or similar varient that I have not identified in the civil war pension records. It may be an error.

It is also likely Wlad may have "re-enlisted" several times. His U.S. pension file is not particularly good in terms of his performance, but he was an old man for then and we have to give him a break. No one else ever has.

This leaves out the Manduke's whose names are misspelled from slavic languages, most notably Ukranian Mandiuk, or Mandzuik. There is another variant Mandzuka, and several others. These are of minimal importance in this lineage, in my opinion. Ultimately, however these may be derived from the same latin root and it may be shown they are linked to the other root names at some point. I do not yet have the expertise to determine that. It is also possible these other variants are also derived from "Manduka" and are altered after the Balkan migrations.

The other issue which haunts me is root origin. The sanscrit word for "frog" is Manduka. This is a religious practice involving meditation and to sit still as a "frog". This is too obscure for this analysis, but interesting.

I remain convinced the common surname root word is Latinate, of great age, and a small obscure family, at least outside Serbia. The primary global concentration in the spelling used by my line is in Kosovo, Serbia where there are 88 Manduka's per million people. None of them must have a computer, or have any interest in family history.

This is telling if my linguistic analysis is accurate. As to if Wlad's actual ancestors derive from Italy, Malta, or a slavic state remains uncertain without a solid connection of documenataion of his family prior to 1820 (or 1824) the year of his birth in "Polen". He left his parents names blank on all of his documents I have found, other than his British military enlistment document that mentions his father also being called Wladyslaw. This would definitely place the family with deep Polish roots in the Late 18th Century, lending a strong possibility that Jan is somehow related as the name is unusual.

We do know he could read and write, probably at least German ( He was a King's German Legion officer-(this helps the ancestral Serbian- migration- to- Austria-arguement, the dates fit)) and Polish (born there), and of course English (married an English girl). He had education and knew the cavalry at Shorncliffe Camp during the Crimean war. This would have been very unusual for the son of a peasant farmer then.

Was he drawn to that war for money or because of his Balkan roots? Had his family long ago been murdered and routed by invading Turks and now he could get some revenge?

Who was the Russian (Wlad's King's German Legion fought Russians in the Crimean war) woman Lucynda Papravich who he steamed to Poland to find and marry in Lomza (in the Catholic church, Lucynda's statement to the US pension officer) in 1886, only to bring her back to Baltimore where he died, undivorced (purportedly) from at least two women?. Obviously this is only a beginning.

Any help or comments are needed (badly), especially from my European brethren in the Balkans and environs, Poland, France, Germany, Italy or Malta who have any family marriage or migration, military or name-spelling data prior to 1820. I hope someone else is out there. Jan must have some other relatives!

I fear that both surnames are at some risk of being lost. The families on this side of the world since Wlad are small with few children. Get to work kids!

One last note Wlad's son Theodore R. Manduka of New Jersey, my 2Great Uncle has an excellent searcheable newspaper article (1940) on Google about his career, military background (also Spanish War) and his service and retirement from thr Raritan Railroad as its Chief of Police. He is an ancestor we can all be proud of. So are Wlad, my dad, and grandfather!
